Established in 1996 as Topp Telecom Inc, Tracfone is a prepaid mobile phone service provider that is headquartered in Miami, Florida. TelMex, Mexico’s largest phone company, bought 55 percent of the controlling interest of Topp Telecom Inc worth $57.5 million. Topp Telecom later became a subsidiary of America Movil, owned by Telmex, and in November 2000 finally changed its name to its present one, Tracfone Wireless Inc. The unique part about their service is that all Tracfone mobile phones are locked to the brand, meaning its service is limited to Tracfone mobile phones only. They use a “Unit” system in which messages and calls are charged by the units, and each service is charged by a deducting “Units” off the total purchased amount.
